I Left My Heart in Koh Samui
If you’re reading this on Facebook, click View Post to see more… Here’s a little history on my adoration for Koh Samui, Thailand (my favorite vacation spot) and some highlights from our visit last week.
Three years ago (2008), I visited Koh Samui, Thailand for the first time. I fell in love with the island paradise and made friends with locals, who I’ve kept in touch with using Google Voice and Facebook. Two years ago (2009), I went back and found myself more enamored by the place and closer with my friends. Last week I paid my third visit to Koh Samui- probably my last for a long while. Saying goodbye to my friends was very, very difficult but the memories we’ve shared are unforgettable!
Koh Samui is a touristy island in the Gulf of Thailand, less intense than Phuket, the biggest coastal hot spot in Thailand. Chaweng Beach is the busiest of the regions in Koh Samui but it brings the nightlife so I’ve stayed there when in town.
Here are a few highlights from our stay in Koh Samui last week:
- STARZ Cabaret: headed to their newly renovated space to watch a ladyboy show (think Diana Ross, Justin Bieber, Whitney Houston in drag)!
- Jetskiing: Ben, Aaron and I rented a jet ski for 30-min out at Chaweng Beach. Had a blast and donated Aaron’s sunglasses to the Gulf of Thailand!
- Beach time: I’m still so white… but at least a little more tanned than before.. We’ve definitely enjoyed laying out.
- Sea creatures: as a bonus at Chaweng Beach, Ben and I spent at least a couple hours capturing these jellyfish-like creatures! We thought they were plant life until we took them back to the room in a water bottle- they were swimming around, trying to escape! oops..
- Big game fishing: our Friday was spent on a fishing boat in the Gulf of Thailand. Our two fisherman guides gave us almost zero guidance and then set us lose on the open seas lol.. Anyway we were able to catch some great fish! And as a bonus we found a restaurant, Green Bird, that was able to cook one of our groupers! Very tasty. :)
- Friends from Samui: my friends Ax, Keaw, and Campbell continue to show me a great time in Samui. BIG THANKS to them for the memories we’ve made over the years. I hope they can make it to America some day!
- Loy Krathong (Lantern Festival): we happened to be in Samui during Loy Krathong, the annual lantern festival dedicated to sending off one’s bad juju into the sky using a lantern- think 1” x 3” hot air balloon. Before sending off our lanterns on the beach we also got to eat some crickets and grubs at the festival!
After a great stay in Koh Samui, it was time to move on. Next up, I’m going to share about our travels in Phuket, Thailand! For now, I’ve got to get my butt up so we can meet our friend’s sister and cousin at the mall.
I hope you’re well! Can’t believe the holidays are almost here- hope you’re getting prepped! :)
Love, Mason
